The research areas at the Institute of Archeology are broadly based and reflect the great variety of ancient life-styles. The core area of classical archeology includes researches on ancient sculpture, ceramics and architecture, as well as on marginal zones of the classical world. In addition, research on the archeology of the Roman provinces, mainly Noricum and Pannonia, is traditionally located at the institute. A major research area is settlement archeology, which is carried out on the one hand by exploration of ancient artefacts, on the other by numerous excavation and surveying projects at Roman, Medieval and modern sites. This is often done in collaboration with the Federal Monuments Office. From this point of view, a focus has also been developed in Medieval and Modern Archeology in recent years. In the last few years field projects in Lissos / Albania, Pheneos / Greece and Tavium / Turkey have been realized in cooperation with other institutions.
