The discipline of Archaeology (Classical and Provincial Roman Archaeology) sees itself as a historical cultural science. The subject of research and teaching is the material legacy of the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean (especially the Greek and Italo-Roman culture). As well as its peripheries and under the influence of these cultures characterized of the Roman Empire. As part of an institution-wide research focus in Graz „Cultural History and Interpretation of Europe“ research of the Institute of Archaeology currently focuses on the research area „Ancient Mediterranean Cultures and their meaning for Humanities and cultural science of Europe“. In this special research focus the second institution-wide research focus “South-eastern Europe” is taken account. This affects the study of archeology in Graz to the effect that, the Classical and Roman Provincial Archaeology are on equal footing. Thus, the exploring material culture of the East Alpine, Adriatic, Danubian and Balkan region is promoted in teaching with archaeological methods.
